Ghostly 2.0/ In Between the Lines

Personal Work

Date: 2017 Spring

Site: San Francisco, CA

Materials: Acrylic, PLA 3D Print, ABS 3D Print, 3D Powder Print, CNC Foam, CNC Wood

Instructor: Dwayne Oyler Vertical Studio @ SCI-Arc

This studio worked on the development of what we are calling "ghostly" architectural characteristics through the design of a museum. The interest is in studying the possibility of both material effects (for example, multiple readings through layering and reflectivity -with something like Mies' Friedrichstrasse or H&D's switching station as the model) as well as the more caricatured figural associations that the term conjures (smoke, curtains, Casper, for example). Among the things being explored are - the nuanced "doubling" of the original, multiple readings of the same object, ephemeral material effects, i.e. fleeting effects and blurred edges.

Kinetic Facade

Using the kinetic movement of a bat wing in motion (pictured below) as a premise for form-finding. Multiple random 60-second intervals of a bat wing flatter are used to create the internal object and the itchings in the acrylic facade. The end result is a facade that changes with speed, the itchings inside the facade give a different reading of the building with different velocities: pedestrian walking speed, highway speed, and regular city driving speed, making a stationary element of architecture, kinetic.

Sectional Model

The primary focus of the project was to create a “ghostly” building, whether that be in the form or the material choices used. Using the kinetic movement of a bat wing in motion, we created an internal object (3D printed) that occupied the programs of the project, seen in the photo on the right.

Internalized Object

Once the exterior material was decided, I then began to think about how to rework the internal object to distort the reading of the building even further. The zebra pattern was carefully chosen at certain angles to distort the interior to create a misreading, making the viewers of the building question the solidness of the edges at certain points of the project.
